Visible in
the night sky of the Northern Hemisphere is the constellation Ursa Major, “the
Big Dipper”.
That we
refer to these stars as Ursa Major, meaning the great bear, is interesting since
the American Indian refers to them in somewhat the same way. Their folklore,
passed through countless generations, says that the lower four stars represent a
great bear, while the upper stars are three hunters in pursuit of the bear.
“Hunter In
The Night Sky” depicts the leading hunter of the group. He has just thrown his
spear to cross many light years to reach the bear.
My
interests have always been in the mythology of the Native Americans. Although,
I’ve known this story since childhood, it has taken until now to satisfy myself
that I solved the creative problems of the concept. |
