Loading his
shotgun the “marshal” with his foot upon the Wells Fargo lock box,
is preparing to board a stagecoach.
I have wanted to
do this man, in a duster, loading a shotgun, for a few years. The
small creative part of my brain has seen him with his double barrel,
leaning against a wheel hub, while he loads a pistol, ramming a
blunderbuss, or loading a sawed off shotgun with a Winchester in the
crook of his arm, before I landed on the lockbox.
This piece will
always be one of my favorites. As far as I know there was no Jesse
Tanner Rankin, but the gun, the lockbox, and the duster are for
real.
The man’s name just
sounds like he should be a lawman; it is also the name of my very
young grandson. |
